Sousa and Almagro take a trip down memory's lane
João Sousa and reigning champion Nicolas Almagro kicked off Sunday’s activities at Millennium Estoril Open with a visit to Casa Sommer where they attended the inauguration of the tennis exhibition “Ténis em Cascais” a retrospective of the first steps of tennis in Portugal
Rare and unique tennis memorabilia kindly donated by renowned Portuguese journalist and tennis aficionado Norberto Santos illustrate the evolution of the sport in the land of Camões.
To understand the genesis of Tennis in the country one has to go back to 1870 in Carcavelos where the first courts where built and the sport started to gain momentum in society.
Carlos Carreiras, mayor of Cascais, the region that nurtured tennis from the beginning and hosted the famed Internacional Championships of Portugal, also attended the event and showed great interest in the historic artifacts, including wooden rackets and posters.
The exhibition in Casa Sommer is open for visitors from April 8th to May 31st.
