Tiafoe prevails in the best match of the tournament so far
Millennium Estoril Open last edition’s runner-up took another win and booked a place amongst the eight best players in the tournament.
Great weather, loads of people, enormous match. Would you dare asking for more? Day 6 at the Portuguese major tennis event couldn’t have had a better finish: Tiafoe got his ticket into the quarter-finals with a winner over Yoshihito Nishioka in the last set tie-break, after 2 hours and 25 minutes of complete show.
The north american, world number 31, had to work hard to come out of a set disadvantage, an early break by Nishioka in the second, and beat the only left-handed player in the singles draw 2-6, 6-3 and 7-6. In the meantime, Tiafoe threw away two match points on his own serve.
But somehow he managed to stay alive and will face another survivor: lucky loser Pablo Cuevas. The uruguayan overcame the italian Filippo Baldi, also a lucky loser, with relative ease: 6-2 and 7-5 in less than an hour and a half.
The crowd at Millennium Estoril Open could also witness Marek Jaziri proceeding to the quarter-finals. The oldest player in the singles draw has equaled his season’s best result, after beating Leonardo Mayer in straight sets: 7-6 (2) and 6-1. The tunisian player will now have fourth seed David Goffin oh his way to the semis.
