Sousa tops Tsitsipas and keeps the dream alive in Millennium Estoril Open
João Sousa defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in high caliber semi-final and is one step closer to historic title conquest in Portugal.
The home favourite prevailed 6-4, 6-1, 7-6(4) in two hours and seven minutes of an emotionally charged battle on a packed Estádio Millennium.
With the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, watching from the stands, Sousa edged the Greek youngster in the decisive tiebreaker and became the first finalist of the 2018 edition of the Portuguese ATP250.
“It’s undoubtedly very special because I’m at home. I’m very proud to be in this final and hope the crowd will enjoy it. The atmosphere today was fantastic and I enjoyed a great support from the stands to reach this final,” said Sousa after the match.
Sousa defeated Daniil Medvedev, Pedro Sousa and Kyle Edmund before downing #ATPNextGen Tsitispas in what was arguably his most stern rival in his bid to lift the trophy on home soil.
In the final Sousa will face 20-year-old American Frances Tiafoe who ousted defending champion Pablo Carreño Busta in the second semi-final or the day.
