Sousa downs Medvedev and seizes first singles win at Millennium Estoril Open
Portuguese No.1 player João Sousa defeated Daniil Medvedev (50.º ATP) in straight sets -- 7-6(1) e 7-5 -- and booked his place in round two of Millennium Estoril Open.
In a sold out Estádio Millennium the home favourite overcame a shaky start of the match and found his stride to seal the win in one hour and 45 minutes. The 29-year-old Portuguese player was looking to get his first win in the singles draw at this venue but he faced strong opposition from Medvedev who was up a break in both sets but was unable to capitalize on that advantage and found himself outplayed at crucial moments. Sousa won 74% of the points on his first serve and converted four out of eight break point chances.
“I was able to play better tactically in the second set. I was able to get the break at a crucial moment and was able to serve well when I needed to,” said Sousa. “I was a bit more aggressive after the break and naturally the strong support of the crowd played a big role out there today.”
In the second round João Sousa will face compatriot and Davis Cup teammate Pedro Sousa who received a wildcard for the main draw and defeated former No.6 ATP Gilles Simon in his debut match. The match between the two home talents ensures that a Portuguese player will make the quarter-finals in Millennium Estoril Open for the first time.
