Australians Tomic and Popyrin highlights best qualifying draw ever
The official list of participants in the qualifying of the Millennium Estoril Open was disclosure today, and the field looks very strong, reinforcing the overall quality of this fifth edition that. This official list includes seven players ranked in the top 100 and closes at 135. Remember that the cut-off of the main draw had already been the lowest ever – the last player with direct entry is 64º.
Qualifying players include clay court specialists Pablo Andujar and Pablo Cuevas, the controversial Australian Bernard Tomic and his emerging young compatriot Alexei Popyrin (who was in evidence in the opening rounds of the Australia Open), the british Daniel Evans (recent Delray Beach runner-up) and the return of spanish Roberto Carballes-Baena.
The qualifying phase runs from Saturday to Sunday (April 27 and 28) and, according to the new regulations, the grid has only 16 elements: 14 direct entries (according to the rankings three weeks before the event begins) plus two wild cards.
