Robredo celebrates 35st birthday with win over Donskoy
Tommy Robredo started off his campaign in Millennium Estoril Open with a solid, two set win versus Russian Evgeny Donskoy.
The Spaniard, former Top 10 and currently ranked 287.º ATP, needed only 73 minutes to prevail 6-3 6-2 in the first match of the day in Estádio Millennium. Solid ground strokes and strong service games – he saved the only break point he faced all match – were the keys to his success, celebrated in style with a birthday cake after the match-point.
A clay court specialist, Robredo won 11 of his 12 titles on the dirt, but the last time he lifted a trophy was in 2013. In early April he achieved his best result of the year in Marrakech where he reached the quarter-finals (defeated by Frenchman Benoit Paire) and came to Estoril with protected ranking status. In the second round Robredo will face compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta, first seed and runner up in the 2016 edition.
