Müller with historical win in Estoril
Gilles Müller will play his first ATP World Tour clay final in Millennium Estoril Open.
The 33-year-old Luxembourgian prevailed in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in the duel of big servers with South African Kevin Anderson and qualified for the final, the seventh of his career, where he’ll fight for the title with Pablo Carreño Busta.
Müller, quarter-finalist last year in Estoril, confirmed his third seed status against a resurgent Anderson and, on the day his son celebrated his sixth birthday, sealed the win after one hour and 38 minutes.
“I’m not playing at the level I played last year but the results are there so I guess I can’t complain. There are some aspects I feel I can improve. Sometimes when I’m leading I switch off and make a string of mistakes, that is something I have to fix.”, said Müller after the match.
Pablo Carreño Busta will be his opponent in Sunday’s final, a match that Müller predicts will be a tough rumble in the clay: “He is in great shape and obviously strong mentally as well. It won’t be easy for me because he has won a lot of matches, many of them on clay. I’ll try to give him a good fight tomorrow”, concluded Müller.
