Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus are the new Millennium Estoril Open doubles champions.
On the day he celebrated his 25th birthday Harrison won his first title of the season on the Portuguese clay alongside his partner and best man – New Zelander Michael Venus by defeating the Spaniard duo David Marrero and Tommy Robredo 7-5 6-2, in under one hour.
For Harrison it was his 4th career title on the ATP World Tour and the 3rd in doubles, yet it was his maiden title with Venus as partner. The American, ranked ATP 52.º, was eliminated by Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarter-finals of the singles main draw but made good on the doubles by lifting the trophy in Estádio Millennium.
“It’s a great tournament and a great city. This is my first time in Portugal but I’ll definitely be back. This title is a huge confidence booster before heading to Madrid and it’s extra special to win it alongside Michael (Venus). I've know him since I was 11-years-old and he is one of my favorite persons.”, said Harrison after the win.
For 29-year-old Michael Venus, doubles ranked at 41st ATP, it’s his sixth career doubles title, the second in clay and the first with Harrison as his partner.
