Fokina has hardly started to win but he just can't stop doing it
The young spaniard has bravely overcome the third seed Gael Monfils and proceeds to the semis at Millennium Estoril Open.
After getting his first ever victory in ATP main draws and also his first quarter-finals, he now reaches his first semis. Each time Fokina plays at Clube de Ténis do Estoril history is being made - apparently it doesn't matter whoever is on the other side of the net, even if it's Gael Monfils.
This was most likely the best match of the current edition of Millennium Estoril Open so far. Loads of winners, a wide range of shots and two players simply enjoying the match and all the atmosphere around, in a fully crowded night session.
In the first set, taken by the most experienced player in the tie-break, there were two breaks to each side - with Monfils wasting his advantage while serving for the set. Both players went on incapable of holding their serves in the second, until Fokina pushed it to the deciding and didn't waver: well prepared and audacious, he conquered three games in Monfils's serve and got his career's most important win - as one could tell by his final celebration.
"He was striking the ball really well, fearless and full of confidence. All credits to him for the victory", commented Monfils - who expressed his joy on court -, surrendered to Fokina's talent.
The world number 167 spaniard (who will certainly climb a great deal of ranking positions) is now waiting for the result of the match between Frances Tiafoe and Pablo Cuevas, to know who he is going to face next in the most important moment of his career (once again). One thing is for sure: he got the interest of the portuguese crowd, which might as well witnessed an historic moment this Friday.
